Travel & Accommodation

By Air

Manchester, Leeds/Bradford and Nottingham East Midlands airports are all about an hour’s travel time from Sheffield.

Robin Hood Airport near Doncaster is around 30 minutes away by car.

Manchester Airport is served by many domestic and international carriers and has a direct rail link to Sheffield both day and night.

Both London airports (Heathrow and Gatwick) are reasonably accessible by rail with just one change of train. We recommend you to allow at least four hours travel time between either of these airports and Sheffield.

By Train

Sheffield is at the heart of the railway network. Regular services operate between Sheffield and London St. Pancras (from just over 2 hours), Birmingham (1.25 hours), Leeds (1 hour) Manchester (1 hour) and Nottingham (1 hour).

There is a direct link on the blue route (in the direction of Malin Bridge) from the railway station (via the main overbridge) to the Sheffield University Supertram stop. The University tram stop is a two minute walk from the conference venue.

By Coach

National Express operates a comprehensive coach service to most parts of the country from Sheffield Transport Interchange, Pond Street. The fastest service to London takes about 3.5 hours. Pond Street is around a 20 minute walk from the conference venue.

The 40 bus runs from the Transport Interchange, and there are Supertram links via the railway station (platform 6b) and Commercial Street.

Megabus coaches connect destinations worldwide, including Meadowhall Interchange which is about four miles from Sheffield city centre, or a simple Supertram journey away from conference venue on the yellow route (in the direction of Middlewood).

By Car

Parking on campus is limited, so if you plan to drive to the University please arrange parking with your hosts in advance. This helps us ensure you find a convenient location.

We recommend that, unless you know the city well, when travelling from the north, east and south you should approach Sheffield by the M1 (and M18 if necessary). From the west, use the M60 and A628 Woodhead Pass, following the signs for Sheffield.

Make sure that you have downloaded the latest map updates for your satellite navigation system before you travel.

If in doubt, follow the road signs labelled ‘University of Sheffield’. The postcode for ICOSS (the conference venue) is S1 4DP.
